Answers for Hip Replacement Questions

Can hip replacement be done as an outpatient? 
Total hip replacement is now commonly done as an outpatient.    When the surgery is done using an anterior approach no muscles are cut  and patients are allowed to bend the hip freely and bear full weight as tolerated immediately.  Patients generally walk with a walker a few hours after surgery.

Where is the incision for anterior hip replacement?
The incision for an anterior approach hip replacement surgery is in the front of the thigh at the top near the groin.

How long does it take to walk normally after a hip replacement?
The time it takes to return to normal walking following anterior approach hip replacement surgery varies for each patient.  Patients are allowed to bend and bear full weight immediately after surgery and progress with outpatient physical therapy for 4-6 weeks.  Most progress from a walker to a cane over the first 2 weeks and are walking normally by 4 weeks. 

Is a total hip replacement painful?
While total hip replacement is still painful, using anterior approach muscle sparing techniques and specialized postoperative clinical pathways focusing on improved pain management, and early mobilization the pain after surgery and the use of narcotic pain medications can be minimized. 

Can you ever cross your legs after hip replacement?
When hip replacement surgery is done using an anterior approach no muscles are cut  and patients are allowed to bend the hip freely and bear full weight as tolerated immediately. 

Will groin pain go away after hip replacement?
The goal of total hip replacement is to relief the pain caused by hip arthritis.  Most people mainly feel the pain of hip arthritis in the groin and this pain is relieved with hip replacement surgery.

What activities can you not do after a hip replacement?
In general, people with hip replacement can resume their normal activities.  Hip replacements can wear out.  Lower impact fitness activities such as golfing and bicycling put less stress on the hip joint and are generally fine to continue.  High-impact activities such as jogging, racquetball and skiing put increased stress on the replacement and may lead to premature loosening and wear.

Can you sleep on your side after hip surgery?
When hip replacement surgery is done using an anterior approach no muscles are cut  and patients are allowed to sleep however they are most comfortable.  Most people prefer to sleep on their backs for the first few weeks after hip surgery.
